The question of real and unreal has been pondered by humanity for ages, but some movies really took the concept further and made us question what exactly is reality. The definition of reality is dependent on perspective and some movie directors managed to alter that perspective in thought provoking ways, which were a jolt to our perceived notions of reality. It enforces the idea that you cannot trust what your eyes see as real and has existence. Check out some truly ‘trippy’ movies which make you ponder – is this reality?
The Butterfly Effect
This movie makes you question reality. Chaos theory is the basis of this movie, which the directors used expertly. According to Chaos theory, an event in the past at any location can make influential events happen far away. Ashton Kutcher (Evan) realises this and traverses between the past and the present where he alters his life and others’. But as small changes can have big repercussions, he finds himself in complex parallel realities trying to sort out life-changing events.
Inception has had thousands of blogs, sites and articles written about it, asking only one question – is this reality? Throughout the entire movie, you wonder whether the actor is dreaming or are the events real. In the end, we are left wondering whether he is stuck in a dream or is reunited with his family for real.
The futuristic reality shown in movies can confuse you too. This film is about a man who gets the memory of Mars implanted in his brain, but the process is a failure. He experiences some visions which he thinks are of Mars and we have to find out if it’s real or just a dream.
Shutter Island makes you question reality, as the film circles around reality and delusion. The end will shock you out of your wits. The film deals with mental illness and what delusions it can create for those who suffer from it.
The reality shown in movies is questionable. But certain movies are unforgettable for the plot which grips you and as things are slowly revealed, you become aware of the shaky reality in your mind as well as the protagonist. Fight Club is an iconic movie which does this in a hard-hitting manner. Pun intended!
Matrix, Sucker Punch, Vanilla Sky and Black Swan, were also powerful movies which explored the concept of real and unreal. These movies can make you ‘unlearn’ certain concepts, and you start to wonder about your own existence.
