Julianne Hough Apologizes For Racist Halloween Costume

We have all seen our fair share of Halloween costumes that were too weird even for Halloween itself. This year we saw a whole host of costumes that were awful and truly offensive. Julianne Hough, from Dancing with the Stars chose to wear an orange prison jumpsuit and colored her face black.

The twenty five year old actress and dancer based her costume on Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren- a character portrayed by actress Uzo Aduba in the film “Orange is the New Black”. Hough even went on to sharing a picture of her wearing the costume on Instagram just before heading off to Hollywood to attend the Casamigos Tequila Halloween.

The photos uploaded on Instagram show her wearing brown make up all over her face with her hair tied into little knots, she completed her costume by dinning an orange jumpsuit worn normally by prisoners. She also added a name tag on her jumpsuit that said “Crazy eyes”. Other photos show her posing with friends who were dressed to portray the rest of the characters namely Piper, Nicky, Alex Vause and Pennastucky, made famous on the Netflix series.

Needless to say, her fans were outraged, prompting Julianne to apologize on her Twitter account. Her statement says that she is a fan of “Orange is the New Black” and was impressed by the portrayal of the main character by Uzo Aduba. She had no intentions of being disrespectful to anyone or to demean any community. She understands how her choice of costume had offended and hurt a lot of people and apologized for it.

Adobe in the other hand did not seem the least bit troubled by Hough’s costume and did not see the actresses’ portrayal of the character as offensive. She has not yet made nay public statement but simply wrote on Twitter to enjoy a gorgeous day, using a smiley face to end her quote.

Hough is not the only one who is under the scanner for a bad costume, Buzzfeed had reported that William Filene and his friend Greg Cimen chose to portray the Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman case that stirred up a nasty racial controversy some months back. The two came under a lot of heat for their insensitive costumes after they uploaded a photo of themselves on Facebook.com with Cimen pointing his fingers in the shape of a gun at Filene’s head. Other celebrities chose to stay away from controversial costumes choosing to portray famous characters from TV shows.
